Audiobook Giveaway: The Rook by Daniel O’Malley

15 03 2012

NOTE: THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED.

So, the Guilded Earlobe has now been posting Audiobook reviews for a little more than 15 months. The initial reason I started this blog was to share my love of audiobooks, and provide spoiler free reviews. I feel that while I have achieved my goal of sharing the love, I have yet to actually share an audiobook. I had planned to have my first giveaway in May, during my Zombie event, which I will be giving more details on soon, but fate intervened.

A few weeks ago, I was perusing the Dreamscape Audiobook, website, checking out the entry to Andrew Vachss That’s How I Roll. I had never actually listened to a Dreamscape Audiobook before, and was perusing what they had available, and discovered they would be producing an audio version of The Rook by Daniel O’Malley. This book had been on my radar, but being that the print release had come and gone, I wasn’t sure whether or not an Audiobook version was actually going to be produced. So, I quickly sent a review copy request to Dreamscape.

Now, if your a blogger, you know that there is always a bit of trepidation about sending out a Review Copy request to a publishing company you have never dealt with before and have no real idea of whom to contact. You don’t ever want to feel entitled or come off as desperate. Yet, as someone who listens to and reviews on average of 15 Audiobooks a month, I rely heavily of review copies and my library to be able to afford other necessities like food and electricity.

As I was waiting for a reply from Dreamscape, The Rook became available on Audible, and I still had a credit so I, being an impatient creature, ended up downloading it. Of course, the next day I received an email from Dreamscape telling me my request had been approved and my copies were on its way. So, long story short. Now I have a shiny, unopened copy of The Rook. So, instead of letting it take up some space on my bookshelf, I decided, why not do my first giveaway!

Here is the Publisher Description of The Rook by Daniel O’Malley.

“The body you are wearing used to be mine.” So begins the letter Myfanwy Thomas is holding when she awakes in a London park surrounded by bodies all wearing latex gloves. With no recollection of who she is, Myfanwy must follow the instructions her former self left behind to discover her identity and track down the agents who want to destroy her.

She soon learns that she is a Rook, a high-ranking member of a secret organization called the Checquy that battles the many supernatural forces at work in Britain. She also discovers that she possesses a rare, potentially deadly supernatural ability of her own.

In her quest to uncover which member of the Checquy betrayed her and why, Myfanwy encounters a person with four bodies, an aristocratic woman who can enter her dreams, a secret training facility where children are transformed into deadly fighters, and a conspiracy more vast than she ever could have imagined.

My Review of The Rook by Daniel O’Malley.

Quick Thoughts: The Rook is one of the most fascinating Fantasies I have experienced in a long time, truly touching that sense of wonder as only the best Fantasies can. In many ways, this is the novel that JK Rowling’s should have wrote next, an adult fantasy that reminds us of those feelings we would get as a child  hiding under our blankets trying to read just one more chapter.

How To Enter:

Entering is quite easy. Just leave a comments here and answer the following question:

If you could have a supernatural ability, yet one that would not help you fight crime or save the world from evil, what would it be?

For example, my two superpowers would be to be able to change any liquid into cold, refreshing Dt. Dr. Pepper, and to be able to instantly get Donald Trump to shut up.

When leaving a comment, please include a way to allow me to contact you if you win. I will choose the winner using Random.org, although your wit and ability to make me laugh me give you good giveaway karma.
