First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones

Read by Lorelei King

Macmillan Audio

Genre: Romantic Fantasy

Quick Thoughts: A fast, fun listen pack full of likeable characters.

Grade: B

It seems like seeing dead people is the in thing. First there was that kid from The Sixth Sense, then there was that Medium chick, and don’t forget The Ghost Whisperer… oh… and Odd Thomas, Dean Koontz’s fry cook ghost seeing dude. Now, joining the club is Charley Davidson, the snarky, swaggering and quite humorous Private Investigator of Darynda Jones First Grave on the Right. Yet, unlike the others in the club, Charlie is also having hot steamy non-corporeal sex with a mysteries and possibly evil spirit like being. Seems like she has enough on her plate, but oh, no…. she’s also the Grim Reaper. Well, everybody’s gotta be something. First Grave on the Right is what I guess you would call a Romantic Urban Fantasy, which is so outside what I normally read that at times I felt like I was hanging in a whole other hemisphere.

Yet, despite some weird moments, I really enjoyed the book. First Grave on the right is just basically a fun novel. The main character, Charley Davidson and her assortment of friends, both living, and well, not so much, are as engaging a group as you’ll find. Charley is a wonderful lead character, and for fans of the genre, I could easily see her becoming a superstar. The main plot, about Charley investigating the deaths of three lawyers, was intriguing but was almost secondary to personalities in the book, and the subplot dealing with Charley mysterious lover. The other highlight of the novel for me were the brief, yet touching moments when Charley would help a spirit send one last message to a loved one, before passing through her to someplace better.

Lorelie King is in her element here. She gives Charley just the right amount of sass, and delivers her quips with perfect comic timing. I can easily imagine her reading the dialogue with a devilish smirk on her face. While not my typical choice of reading material, First Grave on the Right should be a huge hit with those who like there fantasy with a touch of steamy sex, and full of fun, flirty and fascinating female characters.
